Who are we?

SØ1WS

SØ1WS is the official call sign of the Amateur Radio Association of Western Sahara.

The SØ’s first activity in Western Sahara, as a new entity
on the ARRL DXCC list, took place in October 1987, thanks to the initiative of (SØ1A) Naama Zeinddin, a promoter of amateur radio in
Western Sahara.

The Association was founded in the town of Bir Lehlu on November 24, 1996.

The Country

The Saharawi Republic

The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, formerly Spanish Western Sahara, was formally proclaimed on February 27, 1976, in Bir Lehlu and is a founding member of the African Union (AU). It has an area of 266,000 km² and a population of 590,000 (2024).

The country is bordered to the north by Morocco, to the south and southeast by Mauritania, to the east by Algeria, and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean.

Its geography is very diverse, ranging from vast expanses of desert to verdant oases, from arid sands to valuable phosphate deposits. It has an 1,100 km coastline along the Atlantic.

Saguiet al Hamra and Rio de Oro

Saguiet al Hamra and Rio de Oro is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded to support refugees from Western Sahara and promote training and communication projects between communities in Western Sahara and other countries. One of its main functions is to promote the activities of amateur radio operators and other stations wishing to establish themselves in other wilayas (provinces) of the country, as well as maintaining the space for the Western Sahara Amateur Radio Club.

Extraordinary Experiences

Saguiet al Hamra y Rio de Oro

Saguiet al Hamra y Rio de Oro, is a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded to support the refugees people from the Western Sahara and to promote training and communications proyects between living areas of the Western Sahara and with foreign countries. One of the main functions, is to promote the HAM’s activities and other stations, who wanted to stablish their stations across the country in other “wilayas” (province), and mantining the SØRASD’s HAM Club’s place.
