The Saharawi Republic
The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR), formerly the Spanish colony of Western Sahara, was proclaimed on February 27, 1976, in Bir Lehlu. In 1975, it was occupied by Morocco and Mauritania under the Madrid Accords of November 14 of that year. These accords were declared invalid by the international community, beginning with Mauritania, which signed a peace agreement with the SADR on August 5, 1979. The SADR has been a member of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) since 1982.
The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic covers an area of 284,000 km² and has a population of approximately 300,000. It is bordered to the north by Morocco, to the south and southeast by Mauritania, to the east by Algeria, and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean.
Sahrawi TV
RASD TV is the public television channel of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, broadcasting from the refugee camps in Tindouf to raise awareness of the Western Sahara conflict. Launched via satellite in 2009, the channel broadcasts primarily in Arabic and Hassaniya Arabic, including Spanish-language content to connect the Sahrawi community and break the media blackout.
RASD TV broadcasts daily for four hours terrestrially (for the territory of Western Sahara and the refugee camps) and two hours via satellite (for the rest of Africa, Europe, the Americas, and parts of the Middle East). Its programming, consisting of news broadcasts, interviews, historical documentaries, and cultural programs, is mostly in Hassaniya Arabic, with some also available in Spanish.
